On Saturday, March 23rd, supporters of nonprofit counseling agency Queer LifeSpace took to the Crosstown Trail in San Francisco for the organization’s very first fundraising Hike-a-Thon. It was an uplifting day filled with nature, community, and support for LGBTQIA+ youth. The journey wasn't just a physical trek through some of San Francisco's most beautiful green spaces and neighborhoods—it was a stride toward greater access to mental health services.

Starting in the lush landscapes of Glen Canyon Park, the group of hikers embarked on a scenic route that led them through iconic locations, including Grandview Park, the expansive trails of Golden Gate Park, the sandy shores of Baker Beach, the historic paths of the Presidio, and finally, the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean at Lands End.

QLS partner Team Lewis Foundation donated time to record handheld and drone video of the event. This aerial shot is from Glen Canyon Park.

Crosstown Trail founder Bob Siegel accompanied the group for nearly half of the journey, stopping frequently to share insights about the trail’s purpose and history.

Despite a forecast that predicted inclement weather, hikers were greeted with mostly clear skies and sunshine, culminating in a spectacular rainbow that graced a quick celebration at the day's end.

Through the power of collective effort, the event raised nearly $6,000, primarily through team fundraising, individual donations, and a silent auction with items generously donated by Arc’teryx. Funds raised will directly benefit Queer LifeSpace’s youth services, including programs like Outlandish!, which harnesses the healing power of nature; EQUARTY, which empowers emerging LGBTQIA+ artists; and Rural Youth Outreach, providing virtual support where it’s most needed in rural counties of California.

There were several sponsors for the hike-a-thon: Arc'teryx, Ritual Coffee Roasters, and Hole in the Wall Pizza, with additional support provided by Pinterest. Their support was instrumental in the success of the event, and an important reminder of the strength found in community.

In conclusion, the Hike-a-Thon was a day of empowerment, resilience, and unity, where every participant, volunteer, and sponsor contributed to a cause that champions the health and well-being of LGBTQIA+ youth. Queer LifeSpace is incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support!
